The story is all to familiar; a family goes on vacation or out for a weekend
camping trip, or just off for a day's hike and someone gets lost in the woods or
in the mountains. Every year, many people become lost while hiking and
camping in parks, forests, and wilderness areas; and, even worse, many of
those people die before rescuers can reach them.
Time and again, children have avoided searchers because they were
ashamed of getting lost, and afraid of punishment. Anyone can become lost,
even adults! So don't be ashamed. Just admit it, accept it and take actions to
be comfortable while you wait for searchers to arrive. Your parents will be so
happy to see you again, and to know that you are safe. So there's no need to
be frightened or worried about that. They will be so proud of you for using your
head since it is your best survival tool.
The National Association for Search and Rescue, Cactus Rock Farms, and
Hot Spring County Sheriff's Office are committed to reducing the number of
children who become lost each year and to teaching children basic techniques
to aid in their survival if they do become lost. This preventive SAR program
takes its name from its primary survival techniques: "hug a tree."
Since the program's inception in 1981, hundreds of thousands of children have
been exposed to the "Hug-A-Tree" concept and countless lives have been
saved as a result.
